Memory Metaphors: Remembering as Light

As I said, I like memory metaphors. One I hear a lot, since the song is frequently on the radio (including just now):
I seem to recognize your face
Haunting, familiar, yet I cant seem to place it
Cannot find the candle of thought to light your name.
From Pearl Jam's "Elderly Woman Behind a Counter in a Small Town." I sometimes think of remembering as shining a flashlight on some memory stored somewhere in my head. A candle is a bit more poetic, I suppose.
